Rumors: Atlanta Falcons not interested in Urban Meyer despite latest reports

Though many Atlanta Falcons fans turned their heads when the report came out that Urban Meyer may be interested in coaching in the NFL, the preliminary sources discussing the matter say the franchise has little interested in the former Ohio State head coach.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that at least two NFL teams had reached out to Urban Meyer about potentially interviewing for a head-coaching position and that Meyer is considering making a jump to the NFL. Schefter also reported that Meyer was receiving heavy interest from the Jacksonville Jaguars, who interestingly enough, locked up the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on Sunday.

The news that Meyer could potentially get back into coaching had many Atlanta Falcons fans turning their heads as the franchise is in the middle of cutting down its candidate list and preparing to begin interviews within the next couple of weeks.

Despite the reaction from many Falcons fans, the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that there is little traction between Meyer and the Falcons currently.

"“It’s highly unlikely that the Falcons would go the former college coach route after things went so poorly after they hired Bobby Petrino out of Louisville in 2007. He stayed just 13 games and went back to the college ranks to coach at Arkansas,” D. Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC wrote."

Atlanta Falcons have their sights set on a name we’ve all come to know since the firing of Dan Quinn: Eric Bieniemy

While we won’t know who the list of candidates for the job is until interviews begin to be conducted and the season comes to a close, we do know that the Falcons have already shown major interest in Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

The Falcons were reportedly interested in a package deal that would send both Bieniemy (Head Coach) and  John Dorsey (GM) to Atlanta and that seems to still be the target at this point.

It’s all smoke and mirrors and it wouldn’t be surprising in the least to see the Falcons interview Meyer at some point, but it does seem that he is much lower down their list than a few other candidates who have already established themselves at the NFL level.

It’s something worth watching over the course of the next few weeks, but it seems for now that there is very little interest coming from the Falcons’ camp on potentially landing Urban Meyer.
