Not even Deshaun Watson could come through for the Atlanta Falcons

Not even one of the most clutch quarterbacks on the planet- from the state of Georgia nonetheless- could come through for the Atlanta Falcons.

Deshaun Watson finished his 2020 season passing for 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns to just seven interceptions and yet his Houston Texans team could only muster up four wins, finishing the season with a 4-12 record.

So, what does that have to do with the Atlanta Falcons?

Anyone who has been keeping up with draft standings understands that the Falcons were in need of two things to happen to move up into that No. 3 spot in the NFL Draft.

  1. They needed to lose to the Buccaneers
  2. They needed the Texans to win a game

While No. 1 happened with ease, it was the Texans who couldn’t hold up on their end of the bargain.

The Atlanta Falcons will now have the No. 4 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft

When the Falcons needed Watson (and the Texans) to come through the most, not even he could get the job done. Of course, that loss wasn’t by any means on him.

That being said, the Falcons will now pick No. 4 in the 2021 NFL Draft behind the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins (who acquired the Texans’ first-round pick before the season began).

The only question now: What do the Falcons do with that pick?

Do they look to address the future at quarterback? Do they look to take an agile and explosive defender? Could they take an offensive lineman to help solidify that group up-front? Or do they trade back in hopes of gaining more draft capital?

There’s a lot to consider and we won’t know the answer until the new leadership is brought in, but it will be interesting to see what the Falcons end up electing to do as they attempt to become relevant again.
