Atlanta Falcons: Latest CBS mock draft makes zero sense
The latest CBS NFL mock draft has the Atlanta Falcons making a really stupid pick.
Spend an hour watching any of the 32 halves that the Atlanta Falcons played in 2020 and one thing is clear, while Matt Ryan is not the long-term solution at quarterback for the franchise, he still has a few more good years.
What also becomes crystal clear is that this team needs to rebuild the offensive line, pass rush, running back room, and the secondary.
Anything short of drafting a player from one of these areas makes absolutely no sense.
New Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot has said his draft philosophy is to take the best available player. He offered that they will stack the draft board but they are going to take the best player available.
This was of course welcomed news to long-time Atlanta Falcons fans.
However, under no circumstances is Alabama quarterback Mac Jones going to be the best player available at number four, which is who Ryan Wilson of CBS has mocked to Atlanta.
Congrats to Mac Jones for a great fourth year at Alabama and leading the Crimson Tide to another national title, but he is a third-round talent at best and would set the Falcons back years if they chose to take him at fourth overall.
While no one knows exactly what direction the Atlanta Falcons will go in, we can be assured that whoever is writing these mock drafts for CBS isn’t paying attention.
Should the Atlanta Falcons choose to stay at four overall and make a selection, they will more than likely go after one of two players – Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons or Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell.
Matter of fact, they would be more likely to trade into the 11-15 range and select a guy like Alabama running back Najee Harris long before they would take the fourth-best quarterback prospect in this draft.
There is a lot of time to debate what Fontenot and new head coach Arthur Smith will put emphasis on come draft time but one thing we know is that they will not waste their time on a quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.
