Atlanta Falcons will have more success finding a QB when Matt Ryan retires
By Matt Siegman
Everyone but the Atlanta Falcons seems to be ready to replace Matt Ryan.
Rumors surrounding quarterbacks this offseason are all over the place and the Atlanta Falcons are in the mix because they have the fourth overall pick. Time and time again Matt Ryan has proven to be the best player in Falcons history, yet fans still want him gone for idiotic reasons.
The argument Atlanta Falcons fans are making for drafting a quarterback at four is that they will not pick this high again so they should draft one. This thinking makes no sense because they are assuming the Falcons will be better this upcoming season which likely means Matt Ryan will continue to play at a high level.
Drafting a player with the fourth overall pick just to sit the bench all next season is a bad draft move.
The Atlanta Falcons have a hall of fame quarterback and wide receiver and the team needs to maximize the talent they have now because there are no guarantees.
Taking a quarterback now is also a risky pick for the Atlanta Falcons.
From the 2009-2016 NFL Drafts, quarterbacks drafted in the first round are no longer with their original team. Matt Ryan is the only quarterback left that is preventing this stat from being 2006-2016.
Atlanta will have an easier time of trading or signing a quarterback after Matt Ryan retires. Look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for example. They have lacked quality quarterback play for a decade but had pieces in place for a quarterback to be successful. They lucked out and were able to sign Tom Brady in free agency.
The Atlanta Falcons need to continue to stack the roster for a quality quarterback to join the team when Matt Ryan retires.
Look at Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson – both quarterbacks are having issues on their teams and are currently on the trade block.
The Atlanta Falcons need to be able to trade for a quality quarterback when Matt Ryan retires.
The draft is also never a guarantee. Besides Trevor Lawrence, there is not a single quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft that will be better than Matt Ryan over the next four seasons.
