Atlanta Falcons miss the mark on Drew Brees retirement.

On Sunday, Atlanta Falcons nemesis Drew Brees officially announced his retirement after 20 years in the NFL and the Falcons thanked him for his years of service and fans were not happy.

To say Brees owned the Falcons would be an understatement.

He played 29 career games against the Atlanta Falcons (28 of them wearing a Saints jersey) and owned them on the field. He was 19-10 against the Falcons and threw for 8,695 yards and 54 touchdowns in those 29 games.

During the 15 seasons, he was in New Orleans, he and the Saints swept the Falcons seven times – that doesn’t even include the 2020 season when the Saints swept the season series with Taysom Hill behind center.

The Atlanta Falcons should not say thank you, they should be saying good riddance. Do you think the Saints would say anything nice about Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, or any other Atlanta Falcons great when they leave the game? Heck no they wouldn’t nor have they.

Fans were quick to voice their displeasure on Twitter.

Sure, we can all agree that Drew Brees is a first-ballot Hall of Fame player and that he is one of the all-time greats but that doesn’t mean that we have to pay homage to a guy that led your archrival on the field for more than a decade.

The Atlanta Falcons social media team sending this out truly epitomizes what the franchise has turned into – a bunch of nice guys with no edge and no killer instinct, which is why they lost game after game in 2020 despite big fourth-quarter leads.

Atlanta has to find the ability to stop playing nice with others and start being selfish.

It’s okay to not be liked by other fan bases and players, it’s okay to embarrass an opponent on the scoreboard and it’s okay to allow an NFL player to retire without thanking them for embarrassing you year after year.

Imagine if they thanked Tom Brady next.
