The Atlanta Falcons added much-needed depth to their running backs room by signing Atlanta native Mike Davis to a two-year deal last week. Davis might not be a name casual fans have heard of, but Arthur Smith will change that.

The Atlanta Falcons decided to bring in a head coach with an offensive mind, something they haven’t had in a while. Smith made the best of his weapons in Tennessee.

Smith helped turn Derrick Henry from a bust into a 2,000-yard rusher.

Ryan Tannehill was once considered to be a bust as well and now he looks like a Top 10 quarterback in the NFL. AJ Brown and Corey Davis also turned the corner under Smith.

Smith has even more weapons at his disposal in Atlanta which will only help Davis.

Mike Davis brings something to the Atlanta Falcons that they haven’t had in a while.

Coming out of college, Davis was a great runner between the tackles and was a valuable weapon in the passing game as well. Davis is also a good pass blocker which will only increase the number of snaps he will see during the game, he is truly a three-down back.

In 12 starts (15 games) for the Panthers last season, Davis rushed for 642 yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers don’t pop out, but if you look at the offense he was working with, it’s nothing like the offense he will be part of in Atlanta.

Davis won’t be the focal point of the offense because defenses still have to worry about Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, and even Russell Gage. Linebackers have to keep an eye out for Hayden Hurst over the middle as well.

Davis will have every opportunity to reach the 1,000-yard threshold this season and with Arthur Smith calling the plays, there’s no doubt it can happen. It looks like Mike Davis will be a value signing for the Falcons, something they haven’t had in a while.

He will turn out to be what we all thought we were getting with Todd Gurley.
