Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot can change the horrid day two draft results the franchise has had for most of the last decade.

Former Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff excelled in the later rounds of the NFL draft but was absolutely horrible in the first three rounds for most of his tenure. After four straight years of terrible draft picks in the day two of the draft, Fontenot can change the team’s fortunes this evening.

The Falcons will have an opportunity to fill a couple of highly needed positions on defense tonight as the draft still has quite a few highly talented players available.

With the third pick in tonight’s second round and the fourth pick in the third round, he can grab two more starters this evening on a team that desperately needs them.

Atlanta Falcons have been awful in this part of the draft in recent years

Looking back over the drafts that Dimitroff was in charge of, he drafted horrible players in the second and third rounds. He took chances on guys that had no business going that high in the draft and for every Deion Jones he lucked out on, he drafted a Deadrin Senat, Duke Riley, or a Jalen Collins.

Have you forgotten how bad the Atlanta Falcons have been in the second and third rounds – here is a reminder: Corey Peters, Mike Johnson, Peter Konz, Lamar Holmes, Ra’Shede Hageman, Dezmen Southward, Jalen Collins, Duke Riley, Isaiah Oliver, Deadrin Senat, and Marlon Davidson.

We should expect that Terry Fontenot will stick with his “best player available mantra and if that does happen, the Atlanta Falcons will be in great shape tonight and could land players like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Joseph Ossai, Javonte William,  Wyatt Davis, Ifeatu Melifonwu, or Landon Dickerson.

Any of those guys would add depth and talent to the Atlanta Falcons.

Fans should be more excited about Friday’s second and third round than they have been in recent years. If round one was any indication, Fontenot isn’t scared to think outside the box and will do his best to make the roster better this evening.
