Atlanta Falcons: 5 quarterbacks to look at as a potential backup for Matt Ryan

The Atlanta Falcons pre-season has gone a bit sideways with the news that backup quarterback A.J. McCarron is done for the season. Now with only two quarterbacks on the roster, Atlanta must find another option.

Matt Ryan is the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons there is no questioning that fact. However, there should be just a bit of urgency for the Falcons with A.J. McCarron going down. While he had struggled in preseason he was experienced enough that Atlanta would have been comfortable heading into the season with him as their backup.

AJ McCarron’s injury has left the Atlanta Falcons in a bad spot at QB

With McCarron’s season-ending injury now Atlanta must come up with another backup option behind Ryan or at least a player to take snaps in the final pre-season game. Feleipe Franks is the only other quarterback currently on the Falcons’ roster and is hardly a viable option for Atlanta.

While Franks has shown flashes this pre-season overall he has struggled as well. His value has been in his ability to scramble and break runs. He has struggled to pass the ball though he certainly has marginal arm talent, enough to earn him looks like a developmental project.

He isn’t the guy who is going to come in and steady the ship if Ryan were to be injured. For Atlanta, it isn’t urgent to find a backup before week one. They could opt to sign a quarterback simply to take snaps in the final pre-season game before making a final decision on who backs up Matt Ryan. A
