The Atlanta Falcons and Cam Newton are an unlikely pairing, considering the Falcons have Matt Ryan as their franchise quarterback. Newton isn’t better than Ryan at this point in his career and would serve as the team’s backup quarterback.

This is a signing that didn’t make sense for either side when Newton was initially released by the New England Patriots. However, as the season has worn on and Newton remains on the market there is a reason to wonder if he would take a limited role in Atlanta?

The Falcons currently have two quarterbacks on their roster behind Matt Ryan. Neither is proven and either could easily be cut and moved on from in favor of Cam.

Cam Newton and Cordarrelle Patterson could prove to be the versatile playmakers the Atlanta Falcons badly need

After Patterson, there are a lot of question marks on this Atlanta Falcons roster. Is Kyle Pitts going to continue to struggle or will the player we saw in London be the norm going forward? Who behind Calvin Ridley will step up as a consistent target for Matt Ryan?

Cam Newton could be a player that helps unlock this roster. With Feleipe Franks lining up at tight end we have seen Arthur Smith has an open mind when it comes to who can make plays for this team.

Smith deserves a lot of credit for giving Patterson a chance to be the utility star he has been in Atlanta. With his creativity could Newton make this Atlanta offense elite?

Imagine Cam Newton, Kyle Pitts, Calvin Ridley, and Cordarrelle Patterson are on the field on a first and goal who are you guarding?

It is an unorthodox idea but if Newton were willing to accept the role Atlanta should certainly give it a chance. Cam Newton is one of the best rushing quarterbacks of all time, playing the game in a way we haven’t seen before.

Newton has never been an elite passer, however, his ability to run over would-be tacklers remains and is a skill Atlanta badly needs. He would improve both of the team’s biggest issues on offense, their ability to rush the football and their ability to punch the ball in and not settle for field goals.

Atlanta is attempting to turn their season around and in a season longer than ever before could use all the help they can get that help could come from former MVP Cam Newton.
