The Atlanta Falcons still need help in the secondary and now there are two former Falcons sitting in free agency. The New Orleans Saints released Brian Poole and Desmond Trufant two former Atlanta Falcons defenders whose careers are headed in different directions.

While neither player is elite Poole is obviously the better player at this point in their respective careers and could still help a team. Trufant isn’t an option for Atlanta anymore having watched how things have played out for the former Falcon.

Trufant is still being paid by the Falcons as well making it difficult for the front office to justify bringing him back. Bringing back a player on your active roster that is among your biggest dead cap hits is messy and something Atlanta shouldn’t do.

Trufant is no longer a fit with the Atlanta Falcons, however, Brian Poole could be exactly what this team needs

Brian Poole isn’t going to change your defense and improve your team, however, he is a valuable contributor. Atlanta fans know there is one thing about Poole you can never criticize that is his motor and willingness to deliver a hit.

He would offer the Atlanta secondary depth and a player that can help them grow and improve. For these reasons, Atlanta must at least consider bringing back one of their former players who is one of the better free agents on the market.

On the negative side, it may not be appealing to the new Atlanta regime to bring in a player who was an integral part of Dan Quinn’s teams. Poole was a part of a past that Atlanta is trying to move on from and for that reason, they may not want to bring him in.

For the Saints, this was their third swing and miss on former Atlanta players this season having brought in Devonta Freeman as well. All three players failed to stick on the Saints roster with Freeman landing with the Ravens and Trufant and Poole sitting in free agency.
