It was obvious this season that Josh Rosen wasn’t the answer behind Matt Ryan for the Atlanta Falcons.  Rosen struggled in brief stints in throwing interceptions and failing to give Atlanta any reason to think he is anything but the draft bust he appears to be.

If forced to pick the best fit for Atlanta the choice is obvious, Cam Newton will be chased by a lot of teams this off-season. The Falcons should be among them considering what Newton can do and the role he could play for Atlanta.

Signing Cam is a long shot, however, and Atlanta should have an option behind the former MVP. They should look no further than former Cardinals backup Colt McCoy.

Colt McCoy is the perfect option for the Atlanta Falcons if they want a traditional backup quarterback

Ideally, Atlanta finds a quarterback they can use in short-yardage situations or play in wildcat packages. Paying a player simply to sit on the sidelines is necessary but painful when you consider how much capable backup quarterbacks are paid. Having a player that can play a role for your team is certainly the better route if possible.

If Atlanta is forced to sign a traditional backup, however, Colt McCoy is the obvious answer for Atlanta. Colt came in when Murray was hurt for Arizona and helped keep the Cardinals afloat winning a game and running the Cardinal’s offense perfectly.

Colt is a quarterback who is going to run your offense with very little dropoff without any distraction. Colt isn’t a player who fans are going to call for if your starter is struggling but if forced into action he is up to the task.

This is the exact trait many teams are searching for at the position. Colt is the perfect candidate if Atlanta can’t find an impact player at the position. If Ryan was to suffer an injury Colt will give the Atlanta offense a chance, something they definitely wouldn’t have had this season with Josh Rosen as the backup.
