4. Signing Cam Newton to sit behind Matt Ryan would be a dangerous move that would work

This is a suggestion that has been made that is worth re-visiting as we near the end of the season.  Cam Newton is a free agent and with Sam Darnold already under contract, he isn’t going to be brought back by the Carolina Panthers. With the tape Cam put together over the last two years he isn’t going to find a starting job in this league.

Cam’s options are limited and will leave him holding a clipboard or playing in a utility role. What Arthur Smith was able to do with Cordarrelle Patterson should be Atlanta’s pitch to Cam Newton this off-season.

Patterson had the talent but never the offense to showcase what he can do on the football field. Cam Newton still has immense talent but just isn’t a consistent passer in a league that demands elite passing.

Newton running short-yardage plays while serving as Matt Ryan’s backup would be a wrinkle the Atlanta offense badly needs. The problem with this move is the cap it may take to sign Newton. With so many needs to address signing an option behind Matt Ryan is low on the priority list. Still, Newton is an exciting presence who would energize the offense and play an important role for Atlanta.
