What the Atlanta Falcons should learn from the Rams championship
By Nick Halden
Watching the Los Angeles Rams win the Super Bowl the Atlanta Falcons and every other team in the league should have one clear takeaway, going all-in works. The Rams used their draft picks and franchise as if they were managing their Madden franchise.
Going all-in on veteran players at the trade deadline and trading any and all picks they could get something in return for. They aggressively chased Matthew Stafford, Jalen Ramsey, Von Miller, and Odell Beckham Jr. all of who were big reasons that the Rams finally broke through.
It was these extra pieces that allowed the Rams to do what Atlanta never could vanquish Tom Brady and win it all. Now teams can realize that they don’t have to take four and five years to rebuild talent from the draft instead they can go out and chase players who will make an impact right away.
Both of the last two Super Bowl winners won because they were aggressive in free agency and trades, something the Atlanta Falcons must learn from
Going back to last year’s champion the Tampa Bay Bucs one big thing jumps out about their roster. Yes, they already had a lot of talent but what set them over the top was bringing in Tom Brady and being aggressive in the free-agent and trade markets making moves that would ultimately win them a Super Bowl.
A new path is emerging to winning a championship one that the Falcons must pay attention to. Is Matthew Stafford really better than Matt Ryan? That is a question that can be heavily debated now that Stafford won a Super Bowl, however, it wasn’t even a legitimate question before Matthew won a ring and in all honesty, still shouldn’t be.
A ring that he wouldn’t have if not for the Ram’s aggressive front office that went out and acquired Odell and Von Miller near mid-season to put this team over the top. There is clearly a new path now to winning a Super Bowl one in which you push all of your chips to the center of the table and go for it all. Even if you don’t have a great quarterback this approach has proven itself. Stafford isn’t an all-time great but he is good enough with the roster the Rams put together to win.
It will be interesting to watch whether the Bucs and Rams could suddenly change other teams’ approaches when it comes to valuing draft picks and how aggressively they spend at the trade deadline. The Rams have proven that there is more than one way to put together a championship run something that the league should take notice of.
