Matt Ryan has been a mainstay for more than a decade with the Atlanta Falcons. He has also been a consistent player at the most important position in all of sports.

He is a former MVP of the league, which set him up for a brand new contract in 2018. He ended up signing a five-year, $150 million contract with $100 million guaranteed. It was the right move for the organization, as you cannot just snap your fingers and find a new quarterback, you have to have elite evaluation skills and have a bit of luck.

Matt Ryan is set to break the record for the largest cap hit in NFL history

Matt Ryan signed a huge contract back in 2018, but when you consider what he is being paid now compared to other quarterbacks in the league, it is pretty reasonable. What is not reasonable is his cap hit of $48 million.

You have to remember that there is a difference between a player’s salary and a player’s cap hit, Matt Ryan’s average salary is $30 million which is currently the tenth most in the league.

Fans are destroying Matt Ryan for being “selfish” for his cap hit being so high, but that is not at all his fault, it is the team’s fault. Both Thomas Dimitroff and Terry Fontenot have restructured Matt Ryan’s contract, which has pushed money down the road, resulting in such a high cap hit this year.

Again, this has nothing to do with anything Matt Ryan has done, it is due to decisions made by the general manager.

Guys like Carson Wentz, Kirk Cousins, and Jared Goff are being paid more annually than Matt Ryan. His contract looks like a bargain four years later, it is just the cap hit that makes it look so horrendous.

So, stop blaming Matt Ryan for the cap hit, and instead blame it on the poor planning of the general managers.
