The Atlanta Falcons one of three teams left in the chase for Deshaun Watson
By Nick Halden
Whether or not he is headed to the Atlanta Falcons Deshaun Watson will likely be joining the NFC South. The Browns are out of the running for Watson and will attempt to stick with Baker Mayfield or find another answer at the position.
This leaves the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints in contention for the Houston Texans quarterback. It seems from the outside the Saints and Falcons have the inside track for the quarterback for two very different reasons.
The Falcons are Watson’s hometown team while the Saints have a much better roster and could offer Watson the chance to contend if he isn’t suspended.
Atlanta Falcons fans should be attempting the impossible hoping the Saints win the race for Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson coming to the Atlanta Falcons isn’t the story the city or its fans need. Atlanta should be focused on free agency right now and attempting to support veteran quarterback Matt Ryan not joining a division race for a position they have already filled.
Watson coming to Atlanta is bad for the franchise and doesn’t put them anywhere closer to contending. The problem for the Falcons has long been a lack of offensive consistency and a defense that isn’t stopping any quarterback in the league, ask Taylor Heinicke or Tim Boyle if they want to face this Atlanta defense again?
Two quarterbacks who will be sitting on the bench next season put together great games with very bad teams against this Atlanta defense. Even Trevor Lawrence who struggled badly in his rookie season gave the Atlanta defense all they could handle passing for 228-yards and putting together a second-half surge.
The point here being acquiring Deshaun Watson accomplishes nothing for Atlanta except for creating more issues. Any trade package for Watson is going to be incredibly steep the Falcons can’t afford to pay that price with a roster already starving for talent.
Atlanta must wake up and join the Browns on the sidelines letting the Panthers and Saints battle it out for the Houston quarterback.
