Atlanta Falcons likely to make a Matt Ryan trade decision today
By Nick Halden
Matt Ryan is due a roster bonus at 4:00 EST time today likely meaning the Atlanta Falcons will look to trade Ryan today if he is unwilling to return. There is also the chance that the Falcons want to send Ryan to a winning team and commit to a full rebuild.
A full rebuild could prove to be the best option for both Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons. Even the most ardent fan knows this Atlanta roster isn’t going to be a Super Bowl contender any time soon. They consistently lose in the trenches on both sides of the ball and have no clear answer at receiver or running back.
From Ryan’s side, he has to be considering he is entering what is likely to be the last two or three years of solid production. If he wants a chance to get back to the Super Bowl and put a final exclamation point on an impressive resume he needs to leave Atlanta.
Whether it is San Francisco, Indianapolis, Seattle, or a surprise team almost any location would give Ryan a better chance at winning a Super Bowl. Tom Brady owns the NFC South right now and the Falcons have a bad offensive line and lack one starting receiver.
Sending Ryan elsewhere almost promises an upgrade on both sides of the ball. Losing Ryan will hurt but the Falcons set themselves up for losing their franchise player when they chose to chase Deshaun Watson.
If Ryan is willing to return Atlanta will likely stick with the veteran and perhaps search for an answer at the position next season. Next year’s draft class at the quarterback position appears to be better than a middling 2022 class and there could be more off-season quarterback movement as well.
If this is the end of the Ryan era for the Atlanta Falcons Matt should be remembered for the player he was. A great leader and quarterback who came into a historically losing organization and consistently pushed them to relevance. He is an MVP and should be a future Hall-of-Famer who has long been underappreciated in Atlanta and deserves the chance to win elsewhere.
