Should the Atlanta Falcons still draft a quarterback?

Despite signing Marcus Mariota to a two-year deal the Atlanta Falcons could still decide to go in another direction with an early first-round pick and four-day-two selections Atlanta is in a great position to take a shot at drafting a quarterback.  The question is, should they?

Marcus Mariota may have failed with the Titans but perhaps with two years on the bench and time to get healthy his game has developed. There is that chance, but there is also the chance that Mariota is the exact same player who was limited by whether or not he could get out of the pocket and make plays with his feet.

While this skill set will be a change of pace and fun to watch in Atlanta it shouldn’t keep the Falcons from taking a shot in the draft. Drafting a quarterback simply gives Atlanta a prospect to develop and a player they can always choose to sit behind Mariota if the rookie doesn’t win a quarterback competition.

The Atlanta Falcons cannot hand the starting quarterback job to Mariota who should be given plenty of competition

Whether it is early in the draft or taking a project quarterback in one of the final rounds Atlanta needs to bring in plenty of options now that they have parted ways with Ryan. There is an argument to be made that Atlanta should choose a veteran to compete with Mariota, however, drafting a quarterback should be an option as well.

Finding a franchise quarterback is never easy looking around the landscape of the league teams often didn’t find their starter on their first swing. Atlanta needs to use the next two drafts to attempt to find an answer hoping the first proves to be correct.

Without a franchise quarterback, you aren’t going to win with any consistency in this league. Even with a great roster like San Francisco or Cleveland has had over the last three years they have proven you cannot win without THAT guy.

Despite signing Mariota there is no question Atlanta should take another swing at quarterback this off-season. Bringing in a rookie as well as another veteran option and holding a true quarterback competition is the right move for an Atlanta franchise that is searching for answers.
