The Atlanta Falcons dealt Matt Ryan to the Colts in exchange for a third-round pick earlier this off-season in a surprising move. The timing and reasoning for the move were wrong but trading Ryan was the right move for the veteran and for the Falcons.

Attempting to trade for Deshaun Watson before dealing Ryan and reinforcing him as their quarterback before dealing him for a third-round pick is the problem with the move. Chasing Watson when you have Ryan under contract was a very iffy decision for a myriad of reasons that transcend football.

From a football perspective, you are looking to spend your future for a position that wasn’t the problem for Atlanta. Failing to execute that questionable move you in turn trade your franchise quarterback of fourteen years in the same week and sign Marcus Mariota hours later.

Timing and decision-making don’t appear to be skillsets for this Atlanta front office, however, they have set Ryan up for success he wouldn’t have had in Atlanta. The move was the right decision at the wrong time for a team that wasn’t capable of supporting Ryan. Atlanta’s timing and methods are questionable but the reasons they made the move without question are right for the franchise and most importantly Matt Ryan.
