Gone are the days of Matt Ryan, as he moves from the Falcons to a much more talented team in the Indianapolis Colts.

As it stands now, Marcus Mariota is the starting quarterback, but Atlanta has already said that he is not guaranteed the job and will have to fight for it come training camp. This eludes to the idea that they will draft or sign another quarterback, could that potentially be Cam Newton?

Cam Newton could put pressure on the Falcons’ presumptive starter, Marcus Mariota.

The Falcons have an interesting player in Mariota, the former second-overall pick of the 2015 NFL draft has never been the consistent player that was expected of him coming out of Oregon. He has major question marks, so he should certainly not be given the starting job.

Cam Newton is currently a free agent and he has said that he is evaluating his options and wants to take time to decide where to go next.

Newton could come home and play for the Atlanta Falcons, certainly, he would not be opposed to it.

Cam Newton is not the player he used to be, the former league MVP has struggled with injuries and inconsistencies as a passer. If signed, he should not be forced into throwing the ball the number of times that Matt Ryan was expected to. He brings along the ability to help the running game as he is a big and powerful runner.

Who knows if he could actually beat out Marcus Mariota, there is no doubt that Mariota would be the favorite to start for the Falcons, but Atlanta would seem to be one of the easiest starting jobs to get in the league, them and division rival Panthers.

So, watch out for Cam Newton coming back to his home state and providing competition for the Falcons’ new quarterback.
