The Atlanta Falcons may not be set at the quarterback position despite having Marcus Mariota, head coach Arthur Smith has even said so as he claimed Mariota will need to earn his starting job.

Is there a possibility that second-year quarterback, Feleipe Franks, could beat out Mariota for the starting job, or do the Falcons have other plans for him?

The Falcons plans for Feleipe Franks seem to be clouded

The Falcons need to have a plan for Feleipe Franks as he enters his second season as an undrafted free agent quarterback in 2021.

Do not expect Franks to win the starting quarterback job, he was raw coming out of college and likely needs more time if he is going to amount to anything.

The Falcons, however, were seemingly confused at how to use him last season as he lined up at numerous positions for a couple snaps throughout the entirety of the season.

Just look at his snaps at each offensive position via Pro Football Focus:

  • QB – 7 snaps
  • Inline – 3 snaps
  • Slot – 2 snaps
  • Wide – 2 snaps

That looks like a team that does not know what to do with a player. If they wanted to get him involved in the offense, why would he only have a couple snaps at each position, you cannot know what you have based off of a couple snaps? It is just simply confusing.

Then you have special teams coverage where he had the following snap counts:

  • Kick Return – 14
  • Punt Coverage – 2
  • Punt Return – 20

It is obvious that the Falcons had a better plan for him when it comes to special teams. He lined up for a good amount of plays on special teams as it continues to look like they will use him as a Taysom Hill-esque player.

With that being said, he was not given much of an opportunity in 2021, but expect his snap counts to be on the rise as the team enters a throw-away year.

Next. Have the Falcons had the worst offseason?. dark
