A closer look at Atlanta’s 2022 undrafted free agents

WR/KR Jared Bernhardt, Ferris State

Despite being signed with the intent to play as a wide receiver/kick returner, Bernhardt served as the signal-caller for Ferris State last season, leading them to their first NCAA Division II National Championship last season.

In his senior year with the Bulldogs, Bernhardt was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year after passing for 1,322 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 1,421 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Bernhardt was also a star on the Maryland men’s lacrosse team, winning the Tewaaraton Award, which is given to the nation’s best collegiate lacrosse player. Upon leaving the Terrapins, Bernhardt held the school record in both goals and points.

WR Stanley Berryhill, Arizona

Stanley Berryhill, who is fresh off of a standout season at the University of Arizona, signed a deal with the Atlanta Falcons just moments after the draft concluded.

During his time at Arizona, Berryhill played in 37 games and every game for the Wildcats in 2021, earning First-Team All-Pac-12 as an all-purpose player and earning honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors at wide receiver.

In his senior season, Berryhill finished ranked second in receptions among Pac-12 receivers and fourth in total yards, hauling in 83 receptions for 744 yards and a touchdown in 2021. Berryhill also rushed for 121 yards on 19 attempts.

OLB Kuony Deng, Cal

If you followed the show “Last Chance U” on Netflix, this name might ring a bell.

Before playing at Cal, Kuony Deng had a stint at Independence Community College, which was featured on seasons three and four of the hit Netflix show. After grabbing the attention of D-I college scouts, he elected to sign with the Golden Bears in 2019.

At Cal, Deng started 19 games in his career, only appearing in two games in 2021 due to injury. In his career at Cal, Deng amassed 154 total tackles (79 total), 10 tackles for loss, three and a half sacks, eight passes deflected, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Prior to his injury, Deng was named to the Butkus Award Preseason Watch List and the Rotary Lombardi Award Preseason Watch List.
