The Atlanta Falcons are headed into a season facing fewer expectations than the team has since they drafted Matt Ryan fourteen years ago. Atlanta lacks a clear answer at the most important position on the field and lacks one proven edge rusher or receiver.

Add in the fact the offensive line is one of the worst in football and it is easy to see why expectations are low for this group. It is only fair though to point out that while they did get worse at quarterback nearly every other position group has improved coming off of what was a seven-win season.

While the Falcons won’t be competing for a Super Bowl any time soon if the right players break out Atlanta could be surprisingly competitive. A team that surprised pundits last season by hanging in the wildcard race could surprise teams and pundits yet again.

This isn’t to suggest Atlanta could become a wildcard contender yet again without Ryan. Rather this is a team set up to improve in the right positions and could be surprisingly competitive. For that to happen, Atlanta will need breakout seasons from surprise contributors including three rookies who could have a big impact in year one.
