Finding a center to replace Alex Mack was always going to be a downgrade for the Atlanta Falcons. This isn’t a slight to Matt Hennessy but speaks to just how underrated a player Mack is and the level he played every snap for the Falcons. While Hennessy was expected to be a downgrade his struggles went beyond a simple downgrade at the position.

A lot of the blame for Matt’s struggles could be shifted toward left guard Jalen Mayfield. Mayfield’s struggles were so bad last season it affected Hennessy and his ability to take on his own assignments.

This season Atlanta now has options to replace both Hennessy and Mayfield and if both struggle the Falcons won’t hesitate to make a change. Matt is going to be facing an immense amount of pressure to win and keep his starting job. If he does lose the starting center job aside from injury it is hard to see him finding another role on the team. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Hennessy fall out of the league altogether if he is unable to improve from the season he put together last season.
