Where does Marcus Mariota rank among NFC South Quarterbacks?

4. Sam Darnold
Sam Darnold has consistently regressed over the last three seasons despite being given an upgrade of a roster in Carolina. There was some thought that Darnold’s lack of progression was simply due to a poorly run New York Jets franchise and with better weapons, the quarterback would remind the league of his talent in Carolina. Nothing could be further from the truth as to what happened last season.
The numbers don’t do justice to just how poorly Darnold played and how often the defense was asked to carry their quarterback. Darnold is easily the worst quarterback in this division and it would be surprising to see him hold his starting job through the full season.
The Panthers were so desperate to find help at the position they brought in Cam Newton and inserted him as the starter in the middle of the season. Why the team felt the need to bring Darnold back as the starter this off-season remains a mystery. Perhaps it is simply continued posturing as the team sets themselves up to acquire Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo. Regardless, the Panthers currently have without question the worst quarterback in a division facing questions at the position. Something Carolina should change if they get the chance.
