It seems like the Atlanta Falcons will once again be in the market for a new interior defensive lineman as they thought they had secured the position with the signing of Eddie Goldman at the beginning of the month but before he has even played a snap in red and black he has decided to retire from the NFL.

It is a semi-shocking retirement as you do not often see a player sign with a new team and then retire within the same month.

Falcons’ recent signing Eddie Goldman retires after six years with Chicago

Ryan Pace has given us no shortage of evidence that he has some power within the Atlanta Falcons front office. He was fired by the Chicago Bears and then found his new home with the Falcons as one of Terry Fontenot’s most trusted colleagues.

There have been a lot of former Bears players signing with the Falcons this offseason because of Ryan Pace and Eddie Goldman was one of those signings.

He was a second-round draft pick out of Florida State back in 2015 by the Chicago Bears. He was also Ryan Pace’s second-ever draft pick as general manager in the NFL. His first selection was one of the biggest busts in recent memory—Kevin White with the seventh pick (the pick right before the Falcons took Vic Beasley).

Goldman during his six years with the Bears was able to pile up 13 sacks, 175 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 21 QB hits.

Those are certainly respectable stats for a rotational interior defensive lineman. He would have been a great piece for the Falcons’ defense but with his retirement, they will have to look elsewhere for an interior lineman to help out Grady Jarrett.

Eddie Goldman’s retirement was kind of a shock as he had obviously just signed with a brand new team just a couple weeks ago and he is only 28 years old. He still had a lot of football left in him but he obviously had a change of heart.
