3 Surprise Atlanta Falcons who could be on the bubble this pre-season
By Nick Halden
3. Feleipe Franks
Feleipe Franks was signed to the Atlanta Falcons roster as a project quarterback and potential utility player in Arthur Smith’s offense. One year later and Franks is attempting to become a tight-end and serve as the team’s third option at quarterback.
In limited chances last season Franks failed to make an impact despite his speed and athletcism. One year in it seems to be clear that Franks doesn’t have a future in this league at the quarterback position and is a long shot to make an impact for Atlanta as a utility player. While I wouldn’t be shocked if the Falcons carry three quarterbacks going into the season it would be surprising to see Franks as one of the three.
Atlanta is headed into a season with a rookie in Desmond Ridder and an injury prone veteran in Marcus Mariota at quarterback. The team could decide they need a veteran presence and cut Franks bringing in a veteran capable of replacing Mariota in the case of injury and Ridder isn’t ready.
Franks is a fun story and certainly a player to root for, however, at the end of the day this is a business one in which Franks is yet to do anything to prove he belongs in. While at first glance Franks would be a surprise cut it makes far too much sense for Atlanta not to consider moving on from the quarterback.
