Julio Jones became the fourth former Atlanta Falcons player this off-season to join forces with Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Bucs signing a one-year deal with the Bucs. The move understandably was received with a mixed reaction among Atlanta Falcons fans. Julio joining up with a team within the division is bad enough add in the fact Tom Brady is that team’s quarterback and it is a painful move for Atlanta fans.

Despite the fact he is signing with a division rival, however, it was the right move for Jones who is looking for the best possible situation to get his career back on track. With this in mind, there were two clear fits with quarterbacks capable of elevating Jones without needing him to be the number one option.

Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes and Tampa Bay and Tom Brady were the only two teams with both the need for a contributing receiver and a top quarterback who won’t expect Julio to be the number one option.

Tampa was the best choice considering the divisional depth in the AFC West and Tom Brady’s ability to feed all of his receivers consistently. Jones should be a future Hall of Famer but winning a Super Bowl with Brady while playing a contributing role would cement his status and re-establish him as a receiver who can still make an impact.

Julio signing with Tampa might be painful for some Falcons fans but it was the right move for a player who left everything on the field for Atlanta. Consistently playing on bad rosters Jones fought through injuries and gave the Atlanta offense a chance anytime he was on the field.

He is no longer capable of being that player anymore and needed to find a situation to set himself up for success and a chance to win the one accolade he doesn’t have a Super Bowl.
