Three takeaways from the Atlanta Falcons first depth chart
Third takeaway: The Atlanta Falcons are serious when it comes to playing QB Feleipe Franks at tight end
Feleipe Franks has commanded a lot of attention during the Falcons training camp due to him splitting time at two positions — quarterback and tight end.
The depth chart lists this freaky athlete at both of those positions, which means only one thing, they are serious about him playing more than just quarterback.
Obviously, if you paid attention last season, Franks played 50 snaps, with only a few of them being at quarterback, but this year it feels different. It feels like he is actually going to get significant snaps as a pass catcher.
What he proves he can do during the preseason will determine how many opportunities he will get in meaningful games.
It will be really interesting to see how they play him during these next three games. Will he line up at tight end when Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder are throwing the ball and then switch to quarterback when it is his turn? That seems like the most obvious scenario.
The other thing is that the Franks might have been a longshot to make the roster if he were only playing quarterback, and he certainly would be a longshot if he were only playing tight end, but with him playing both positions, his spot on the final 53-man roster might be secure, but we will see.
Needless to say, keep an eye on Feleipe Franks throughout the entire preseason, it will be interesting to see how he is used and how he performs.
