Falcons should remain open to Calvin Ridley returning in 2023
By Nick Halden
Before Calvin Ridley’s off-season suspension the Atlanta Falcons shopped the receiver hoping a change of scenery would help Ridley get back to the player he was in the 2020 season. When Atlanta learned the suspension was pending they cut off trade talks and waited to see what Ridley’s punishment would be for betting on games during the season.
While Calvin did this while he was away from the team it is still strictly against league policy and Ridley was suspended a full season because of it. The punishment is certainly harsh when you look at other suspensions around the league over the last half-decade. Suspending Ridley for a full season might not be right but it is a punishment that will stand leaving the Falcons without Ridley until next season.
When Calvin Ridley returns in 2023 will the Falcons continue to shop the receiver or attempt to play and extend their former first-round pick? The right answer for Atlanta is going to be bringing Ridley back in a push to contend and give the receiver a chance to rebuild value. If Ridley bounces back he will help push Atlanta into contention, if not Atlanta can let Ridley walk in free agency and move forward.
There isn’t a receiver in free agency or on the trade market the Falcons will be able to acquire next off-season with Ridley talent for his $11-million price tag.
Whether it is Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, or a new addition at quarterback Calvin Ridley will be a huge addition to the Atlanta offense. If Drake London pans out as expected Ridley can come in behind London and Pitts just as he did behind Sanu and Jones in his first seasons.
This is the role Ridley thrived in as the second or third option with a great running mate in Julio Jones. If the Falcons can put Ridley in this role with a reliable quarterback their offense has a chance to be lethal if they figure out how to keep the quarterback upright consistently.
Calvin Ridley staying on this roster and returning to the team next season is far more valuable than any trade compensation. Bringing back Ridley is the equivalent of landing a star-free agent for a team that even with Ridley will have the money to make a splash in free agency next off-season.
