4 Falcons players whose stock is pointed up after preseason loss to Jets
By Nick Halden
1. Marcus Mariota
Before missing his final two passes of the night Marcus Mariota was 6/8 for 132-yards and the lone Falcons touchdown of the night. Marcus seems to have locked down the starting job for the Falcons, however, he had to feel just a bit of pressure after Desmond Ridder’s preseason debut. Ridder looked great for the Falcons throwing the game-winning touchdown and consistently driving Atlanta down the field.
Mariota’s starting job might not have been in danger but he certainly needed a strong performance. He responded by hitting two deep passes and making quick and accurate decisions with the football.
The broadcast noted more than once just how impressive Mariota was with how quickly he was getting the football out of his hands. Not scrambling or taking risks, Mariota took the snap and made the right read and decision almost instantly. It was an impressive game for Mariota albeit against the Jets second team with Mike White starting at quarterback for New York.
It wouldn’t be surprising if this is the last time we see Mariota this preseason and Atlanta starts Ridder and brings in Franks in relief to allow Mariota to head into the season healthy and with momentum.
