The Atlanta Falcons locked in their first 53-man roster on Tuesday making several surprising decisions setting the team up to start the season. At quarterback, the Falcons made the predictable decision of starting the season with Marcus Mariota as the starter and rookie Desmond Ridder as his backup.

Feleipe Franks did make the initial roster but as he displayed throughout the preseason he isn’t a viable option at the quarterback position. For Atlanta to put Franks in the game at quarterback it should take multiple injuries and be an emergency answer to help the Falcons make it through a game.

Franks is a great athlete who is willing to seek out contact and is capable of making a play, however, two years in it is clear he isn’t a quarterback and hasn’t developed as a passer. Franks being on this roster is simply as a utility player, Atlanta knows what any fan that watched the preseason does, Franks isn’t an option at quarterback.

Still, it wasn’t a big surprise that he made the roster considering Arthur Smith’s appreciation of utility players and the obvious interest he has had in finding a way to use Franks on this roster. The more surprising Falcons roster decisions are worth taking a closer look at as we near the kickoff for Atlanta.
