3 Coaching adjustments the Atlanta Falcons must make in week two
By Nick Halden
1. Arthur Smith has to believe in his offense to win the game
This is an offense-driven league that is consistently changing its rules to the benefit of the quarterbacks and the offensive-driven teams. Building an elite defense is increasingly difficult the clearest path to competing in this league is having a franchise quarterback and surrounding him with playmakers. While the Falcons might lack the proven franchise quarterback they have no shortage of proven playmakers.
There are plenty of issues you could pinpoint as things Arthur Smith has to improve in week two. None are bigger than his decision not to believe in his offense and punting the football to the Saints who would set up the game-winning kick.
The Saints’ offense was on fire and Jameis Winston had just led the team to a quick 14-point comeback punting the football when your offense has 4th and short is unforgivable. Lineup and put Mariota under center and have him hand the ball to Cordarrelle Patterson and live with the result. Perhaps Patterson doesn’t get the first down and you’re left in the same situation. Only the Saints would have a much shorter distance to go and perhaps left Mariota more time to get Koo a legitimate chance to win the game.
Even more likely is Patterson converts the first down and Atlanta wins the game. Arthur Smith didn’t believe in his offense and coached this game trying not to lose instead of trying to win.
