The Atlanta Falcons showed much-improved roster depth in week one against the New Orleans Saints with one obvious position in need of improvement. The Falcons have been forced to shuffle their offensive line rotation throughout camp, the preseason, and into week one due to the number of injuries and lack of performance at the position. The one consistent force for Atlanta on the inside has been Grady Jarrett.

Grady reminded the league what a problem he can be when he has capable pass rushers around him. Jarrett finished last Sunday’s game with 1.5-sacks and a number of impact plays that won’t show up on the box score.

Getting Jarrett help on the inside should be high on Atlanta’s priority list considering the lack of depth behind him. One name still sitting in free agency that should jump out at Atlanta is veteran Linval Joseph.

Joseph has been a part of a solid Vikings defense and spent time with the Chargers and Giants. He has 75-career quarterback hits and 56-tackles for a loss. While he may not be the player he once was he would still be a clear upgrade for Atlanta on the inside.

Atlanta could ease Joseph into a role as well allowing Rush to continue to start alongside Jarrett and using Joseph as a rotational lineman until he proves himself ready to start. The Falcons have the cap space and the roster spot considering the number of fringe roster players currently on the 53-man roster.

With the cap and roster spot both available it is hard to find a reason why the Falcons wouldn’t bring in the veteran lineman. At worst he can serve as a mentor to a very young and inexperienced position group, at best he becomes a productive member of Atlanta’s defensive rotation giving Atlanta a piece they are sorely lacking along the defensive line.

4 Falcons that must step up and deliver in week two. dark. Next
