3 Atlanta Falcons who let the team down in week two
By Nick Halden
2. Marcus Mariota
Marcus Mariota had some great moments in Atlanta’s comeback attempt finishing the game with 196-passing yards and 2-touchdowns. However, it was the three turnovers that proved to be the end of the Atlanta Falcons’ comeback attempt. Mariota is the biggest reason the Falcons’ comeback attempt fell short on Sunday throwing an unforgivable pass to Bryan Edwards on Jalen Ramsey.
With 3rd and long there was no reason for Mariota to force the ball to Edwards against one of the best corners in football. Not only did he make the decision to force the ball to Edwards it was an overthrow that gave Ramsey the clear advantage in making what would be the game-winning catch.
Even if Mariota throws the ball away and lives for 4th down Atlanta still has a chance to make a play and complete the comeback. Add in consistent overthrows in this game and it is obvious why Mariota hasn’t been a starting quarterback over the last three seasons. While his ability to make plays outside of the pocket is electric his inability at times to make the mundane plays is head scratching and was one of the biggest factors in why Atlanta fell behind and why they were unable to complete the comeback.
