3. Put the ball in Patterson’s hands more often

One of the most confusing decisions the Falcons made against the Rams on Sunday was the number of carries they gave to Marcus Mariota and rookie Tyler Allgeier.  Coming off of a great game against the Saints and an impressive 2021 breakout season Patterson has proven he can help the offense consistently move the football.

However, Atlanta didn’t use Patterson as the primary back giving him a large workload or allow him to play the utility role he did last season for Atlanta. Whether it is lining up at receiver or taking consistent handoffs the Falcons need Patterson to be at the heart of this offense.

What allowed them to take the early lead against the Saints was Patterson’s running style that demanded the Saints pack the line and dare Mariota to throw the football. Patterson is Atlanta’s best chance at a consistent running game and giving the team a chance at a balanced attack. We know Arthur Smith wants to run the football, however, at times he is doing so to the detriment of his offense. If you’re going to run the football consistently put Patterson in as the starter and allow him to take on a heavy workload.
