3. Atlanta’s defense

As many injuries as San Francisco might have been dealing with they still had their star playmakers and more than enough talent to move the football. Add in late injuries to A.J. Terrell, Casey Hayward, and Isaiah Oliver and it makes what this unit accomplished all the more impressive.

The early defensive score helped set the tone and the defense continued to hunt the football forcing a Jimmy G. fumble and picking the quarterback off twice. Despite failing to register consistent pressure this defense found ways to get stops either creating turnovers or rallying to the football and making tackles at a level Atlanta hasn’t in a number of seasons.

Perhaps Dean Pees’ off-season and camp comments weren’t simply defensive bluster but an indication of what is to come for this Atlanta team.  While they are still a pass rusher away from being a good defense they play with the hustle and a level of belief that is going to help keep the team in every game this season. Last year this defense wouldn’t have had a prayer of beating this offense and winning the line of scrimmage.
