One of the best rivalries in sports is between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints. Find a Falcons fan and ask them their most hated team, they will likely say the Saints, and the same thing for the other side.

However, once in a blue moon, there are those situations where you may need to root for the bitter rival because their win could benefit your team, and that is the situation tonight as Atlanta Falcons fans should be rooting for the New Orleans Saints.

It may hurt a lot, but Falcons fans should be hoping for a Saints win

The New Orleans Saints have traveled over to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an NFC South clash. This game WILL have huge implications on who ends up winning the division and for the long-term benefit, Atlanta Falcons fans should be pulling for a Saints win on Monday Night Football.

Currently, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sit just ahead of the Atlanta Falcons in the division with two fewer losses. With a win, the Bucs’ odds of winning the South would shoot up, but a loss could keep the door open for the Falcons to pull off a miracle and win the division.

The ironic thing about this is that if New Orleans wins, it will knock Atlanta down to third place in the division, which seems like a bad thing but it isn’t over the long haul.

Atlanta cannot control anything for about two weeks since they are going into their bye week, but their first game out of the bye week is against the Saints who will also be coming off of their bye.

If the Buccaneers lose to the Saints and 49ers, which is very possible, and then the Falcons beat the Saints in New Orleans, then the Falcons will have control of the division. It would then come down to them closing out the division with three games remaining, one of which would be against the Buccaneers to close out the regular season. While unlikely, it is still in the realm of possibilities.
