Tyler Allgeier had a fantastic rookie year with the Atlanta Falcons, no doubt about it. He was also the NFL’s best running back over the final four weeks of the season but despite that, another running back took home the NFC Offensive Player of the Month award.

Although the Atlanta Falcons had one player win a Player of the Month award (thankfully), they should have had two, as a more popular player took the place that should have been Allgeier’s.

Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier should have been NFC Offensive Player of the Month over Christian McCaffrey

Yes, I said it, Tyler Allgeier had a better final month for the Falcons than Christian McCaffrey had for the 49ers. Don’t believe me? Then check out this stat that proves just how good the rookie running back was.

Tyler Allgeier had the raw numbers when you look at his rushing yards and he was the best running back in the NFL over the final month when it came to breaking tackles, pushing for more yards, running for first downs, and pulling off explosive runs.

Here are some stat comparisons between Allgeier and Christian McCaffrey over the final four weeks (McCaffrey’s numbers will be in parentheses):

  • Rush Attempts: 79 (70)
  • Rush Yards: 431 (320)
  • Rush Yards per Attempt: 5.5 (4.6)
  • Receptions: 6 (17)
  • Receiving Yards: 52 (148)
  • Yards per Reception: 8.7 (6.7)
  • Catch %: 86% (77%)
  • Points scored: 14 (24)
  • Total Yards: 483 (468)

Now, the numbers are similar and McCaffrey has more points scored, but look what Allgeier was able to do. He put up more rush yards, more yards per attempt, and more total yards. You add in the stats that were shown in the tweet above, the Falcons rookie should have won the award.

I get it, McCaffrey is a great player and likely won it due to scoring more points and being on a playoff team, but Allgeier was the best running back in the final month. If they were going to give it to an RB, then it should have been the rookie.

At the very least, he should have been the conference’s Rookie of the Month. Instead, Brock Purdy took it home despite the fact he had the “NFC Player of the Month” in the backfield, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel (for a game), Brandon Aiyuk, and a strong offensive line around him.
