4 Backups the Atlanta Falcons could sign to push Desmond Ridder
By Nick Halden
3. Cam Newton
Yes, Cam Newton is a year removed from playing meaningful football, however, bear with the reasoning for a moment if you will. Atlanta isn’t looking for a starting quarterback but a veteran who can provide value and push Desmond Ridder in practice and throughout the season.
Newton is loved by his teammates and brings an infectious energy. Newton was a solid starter for the Patriots two years ago before dealing with COVID and struggling to bounce back. When healthy his time with the Patriots was a success and showed what he is still capable of even at this point in his career.
Last year’s starts with Matt Rhule shouldn’t be held against him. Every quarterback that played for Matt Rhule looked truly awful. Cam could still be used as a weapon in Atlanta’s offense as a wildcat quarterback andshort-yardagee option. The one issue is obvious even at Cam’s best he isn’t an elite passer and isn’t going to help push Ridder drastically in that department. Though when looking for a backup there will always be an issue. Cam is a solid option and would be offered a path back in the league and perhaps eventually a starting role elsewhere.
