This is the ultimate warning sign that if you do not build a complete roster and have a strong coach in place your quarterback won’t matter. There are obviously outliers in Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning over the last decade who have been the system themselves able to cover for incomplete rosters. For the majority of quarterbacks, however, even those inside the top ten everything around them has to be working to have success.

Perhaps Denver’s blockbuster move of trading for head coach Sean Payton will be the missing piece that pushes Russell Wilson back on track. For the time being, however, this trade is embarrassing for a Denver team that handed Seattle two first-round picks and roster depth in exchange for a quarterback who had the worst season of his career.

Rumblings of Russell Wilson not fitting in Seattle have followed Wilson since the Legion of Boom days and finally ended with a trade. Seattle made the playoffs and looked just as good as they had the season before with Russell while the Broncos fought with the Raiders for the cellar of the division and won a top-ten draft pick that will be handed to the Seattle Seahawks. Perhaps in two years this trade ages differently but for now this deal is the ultimate warning to a playoff-hungry team looking to take a big swing. One that ended with Denver’s head coach being fired and Seattle and Geno Smith making the playoffs.
