4 Things Desmond Ridder must do to stay Atlanta Falcons starting QB
By Nick Halden
2. Pass for 3,500 yards
Desmond Ridder started four games for the Falcons and totaled 702 yards averaging 175.5 yards per game. In today’s league that production isn’t going to cut it even in Arthur Smith’s run-heavy offense. For Ridder to hit this benchmark the second-year quarterback simply needs to average 206 passing yards per game, a very achievable number when you are in an offense that can run the ball at will and have Kyle Pitts and Drake London are primary targets.
While this is a huge leap for a second-year quarterback it is one that Ridder needs to make to prove he belongs in this league. Ridder can create plays with his legs but is a far better passer than a scrambler, unlike his predecessor.
Winning ten games and passing for 3,500 yards would be enough to have the Atlanta Falcons buying in on a quarterback who will be a bargain for three more seasons and would give Atlanta a chance to build an elite roster if he is able to prove to be a reliable starting option.
Ridder showed impressive progression with his passing yard totals each week despite not having Kyle Pitts or depth at receiver. If Atlanta fixes the position there are zero reasons Ridder cannot reach this total and bring balance to Arthur Smith’s offense.
