4 Best Atlanta Falcons draft picks under Terry Fontenot
By Nick Halden
2. Kyle Pitts 2021 1st Round Pick
While there is an argument to be made the Falcons should have picked Micah Parsons, Justin Fields or Ja’Marr Chase in this spot it is important to remember the situation. This was Atlanta’s current front office looking to make the safe selection with their first ever first-rounder. Still believing they had their receiver in Calvin Ridley and possibly their quarterback in Matt Ryan. The team wasn’t ready to move off of either player and needed the can’t-miss prospect to build around.
Despite a down year in 2022 Kyle Pitts remains that guy and was the right selection for the situation. What Pitts lacks is a franchise quarterback to put up the elite numbers that Chase has through his first two seasons.
Pitts is a walking mismatch and was misused far too often as a blocker during the past year. A lot of this is due to Marcus Mariota being unable to get on the same page and consistently overthrowing Pitts. This is a true accomplishment considering Kyle’s catch radius and ability to make the contested catch. Pitts showed what he is capable of as a rookie with no other star players around him. If Desmond Ridder is the franchise quarterback many believe him to be imagine what numbers Pitts will put up next season alongside Drake London with a capable passer.
