Atlanta Falcons: The underrated part of Tyler Allgeier’s game
Tyler Allgeier had a phenomenal rookie year for the Atlanta Falcons; a year in which he rushed for 1,000 yards and gained the second-most yards on the ground in the Falcons’ rookie history. All of that from a fifth-round pick who spent some time playing linebacker at BYU.
The yardage is all great but any coach would tell you that yards mean nothing if you can’t hold onto the ball. Fortunately for Arthur Smith, that was the last thing he had to worry about from his rookie running back.
Tyler Allgeier fumbling zero times on 210 carries might be his most impressive stat with the Atlanta Falcons
We already mentioned how much coaches hate fumbles, but fans do too, which is much of the reason Atlanta Falcons fans have high regard for Tyler Allgeier. Even if it is subconsciously, no one likes holding their breath when a player gets the ball.
Just think back to Tevin Coleman’s rookie year in 2015, he had 87 rushes and three fumbles. Fumbling once every 30 carries feels like once every five carries. Clearly, he turned into a great player for many years but this shows how great Tyler Allgeier was this past season.
He ran the ball a total of 210 times, caught 16 passes, and fumbled zero times. It doesn’t get much better than that—it is even difficult to remember a time when the ball came close to falling out.

Now, compare that with the veteran RB Melvin Gordon who fumbled five times on 90 carries with the Broncos, and it resulted in his being released. Although I think it all turned out fine as he ended up with a Super Bowl ring despite having zero carries with Kansas City.
Anyways, Allgeier should get more credit for his ball security. He is a powerful runner who doesn’t like to go down, which makes it even more impressive.
Nevertheless, I’m sure the coaches saw it coming considering he carried the ball 452 times at BYU and fumbled just twice. If he can keep it going, he will remain a favorite amongst coaches and fans.
