If the Atlanta Falcons are going to move forward with Desmond Ridder the backup quarterback position becomes far more important than in seasons past under Matt Ryan. Atlanta now has a mobile quarterback that ups both injury risk and a second-year player who could use a veteran to rely on and learn from.

Having a veteran on the sideline and in the room throughout the week can make a huge difference. Atlanta will have to weigh bringing in a veteran along with a player they believe can win games with a strong roster if forced into action.

To be clear Ridder should be the starting quarterback with it being made clear to the backup quarterback they are here not to compete with Ridder but to push the quarterback and help develop his game.

Looking at Atlanta’s options in free agency the four best options become clear for a team that cannot afford to wait on the position deep into free agency. Atlanta needs a player capable of stepping in and starting at a high level and must be willing to spend the money they will be saving by having Desmond Ridder as their starting quarterback.
