One of the quieter but more impressive moves the Atlanta Falcons have made over the last three seasons is finding a way to turn Dean Pees retiring into bringing both Ryan Nielsen and Jerry Gray to the coaching staff. Jerry Gray will be an assistant head coach/defense specialist helping Arthur Smith in a number of roles.

Bringing Gray and Nielsen together is a fantastic move from the Falcons bringing two coaches together that were both qualified for the defensive coordinator role. Gray has spent time as a defensive backs coach with the Seahawks, Titans, Vikings, Commanders, and Packers.

Green Bay promoted Gray to defensive back coach/passing game coordinator two years ago and Gray has thrived in that role. Atlanta adds a great defensive mind that will help turn around the Atlanta defense and could help the team land free agents to complete a defense badly in need of an infusion of talent.

Looking at Gray’s time in Green Bay and Minnesota in particular three players stand out as potential fits for the Atlanta Falcons.
