3 Reasons Why this Offseason is make or break for Atlanta
3. An improved quarterback situation
The quarterback position may very well end up deciding the fate of the 2022 season for the Atlanta Falcons. If a football team doesn’t have the quarterback position nailed down in their scheme, it can be a nightmare trying to win games.
Despite Desmond Ridder putting the Falcons in good positions to win games, the rumors about current Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson being traded to the Falcons have been nonstop. The Falcons have the draft capital to make a deal happen, as well as the cap space to take on the contract Jackson would be demanding.
This would only happen if Jackson doesn’t agree to a contract extension with the Ravens, of course.
But a big question the fans may ask is, should the Falcons trade for Jackson given that they just got out of a terrible cap situation? Jackson has also missed quite a few games over the last few seasons, and the Falcons would have to give up multiple draft picks to land him. But it would be difficult to turn down what would be a franchise-altering move that would see fans flock to Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sundays.
On the other hand, it also makes sense to try and compete with Ridder while he’s on a rookie contract, as they would keep their draft picks and also use cap space to sign free agents to help Ridder and co. The Falcons could also simply sign a veteran quarterback to compete with Ridder/serve as a last-resort backup.
Those three reasons will ultimately play a huge part in the success for the Atlanta Falcons this upcoming season. Terry Fontenot and Arthur Smith will have many tough decisions to make as a new season awaits.
