Every team uses the exhibition games to evaluate all the players behind the roster locks. You have to build a team that can withstand numerous injuries at a single position if you want to make the playoffs.
These three games will determine the fate of these three Atlanta Falcons players.
These Falcons are fighting for their roster spot harder than anyone
Jack Strand - QB
Jack Strand, despite being an undrafted free agent, does find himself in a good position. If he doesn't make the roster, he becomes a prime practice-squad candidate.
However, his preseason performances will have a massive impact on his future. The Dirty Birds could look to keep three quarterbacks, considering the extensive injury history of their top two guys. If any team needs a high-upside No. 3, it is the Falcons.
Strand is competing with long-time backup Cooper Rush. We know Rush is a decent player who has won games. But Strand brings a sense of excitement with a rare combination of size, athleticism, and arm talent.
If he can land the No. 3 position, he could find himself playing in a regular-season game. Not many UDFAs get that opportunity, especially if you are on the practice squad.
JD Bertrand - LB
The new regime hasn't been shy about giving up on disappointing draft picks from the previous regime -- which is why JD Bertrand's active status is surprising.
We saw Troy Andersen get released because of his injury issues. For Bertrand, it is all about his play on the field. Last season, he was thrust into a starting gig after Divine Deablo was injured. To say it went poorly would be an understatement.
If he can't improve his play on defense, he will be released in a blink -- even with special teams value.
Bralen Trice - OLB
Bralen Trice is in the same boat as Bertrand, but for different reasons.
The former third-round pick has yet to play in a regular-season game. Everyone still hopes he can be the player he was in college. However, Cunningham won't be afraid to let him go if he doesn't play well in the preseason or gets injured.
This is about Trice doing enough to give the front office and coaching staff a reason to stick with him.
