The Minnesota Vikings come in boasting the 9th ranked scoring defense in the NFL allowing only 18.6 points per game. They feature a ferocious defensive line led by Sharrif Floyd, Linval Joseph and Everson Griffen and also hold some talented linebackers in Jasper Brinkley, Chad Greenway, and rookie Anthony Barr. Falcons fans are very familiar with Anthony Barr as the Falcons took a long look at him during the draft process to help bolster their pass attack, remember all the debate about this kid in draft day? (Jake Matthews was the better pick by the way)
Their secondary features a former divisional foe in CB Captain Munnerlyn of whom the Falcons are well acquainted with. Munnerlyn typically played well for the Panthers in games against the Atlanta Falcons last season, he will be matched up against Julio Jones. Second year corner Xavier Rhodes is developing into a pretty good corner.
“Captain Munnerlyn may be the most underrated cornerback in the league”
The Vikings defense is fast and they swarm to the ball. They are very aggressive and because of it they are susceptible to the big play. The Falcons would be wise to utilize the play action pass to take a couple of shots deep down the field.
Their head coach Mike Zimmer will definitely have his finger prints on the defense as he has been known as one of the best in the league for years. He hired George Edwards to run the defense, they had previously worked together before. Edwards’s defense did a great job against Drew Brees and the Saints last week after allowing 13 quick points in the first quarter, the Vikings only surrendered 7 points the rest of the game effectively shutting down the Saints high powered offense. Pretty much, this is going to be an amazing game to watch.
