It was never going to be easy for veteran quarterback Rex Grossman, coming out of retirement to try and land the backup job in Atlanta. But when an opportunity arises in the National Football League, you need to grab it. Unfortunately for Grossman, he was unable to do that. With familiarity with Kyle Shanahan’s offense, the Falcons hoped the veteran could come in and produce right away.

Sean Renfree played the first half against the Baltimore Ravens, with Grossman’s first chance coming later on. He completed just four of nine passes for 41 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. A passer rating of 58.1, and no opportunity to shake off the rust. Grossman, along with T.J. Yates, was waived Friday.

What this means for the backup quarterback spot is still uncertain. Do the Falcons trust Renfree going forward? He had plenty of time to impress against Baltimore, and finished 10 of 15 for 75 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. With a passer rating of 100.7, it was his best showing in preseason.

Maybe Atlanta will look to add in another veteran to the group. Time is running out to sort out the backup spot, and right now it looks like Renfree has won the job.
