Atlanta Falcons: What makes them start slow?

The Atlanta Falcons have had their fair share of struggles through the first six games of the year but have managed to scratch and claw their way to a 5-1 record.

The Falcons have used four fourth quarter comebacks to pick up the pieces of their slow start to games, but the question that needs to be answered is what makes them start slow?

Let’s remember one thing. The Falcons’ offense is pretty much the same from a season ago, but the dynamics of it is completely different. The Falcons have a brand new offensive coordinator in Kyle Shanahan and a brand new offensive scheme.

A new offensive scheme takes a lot of time and preparation to get used to. This in tune has forced quarterback Matt Ryan into some difficult situations thus far. Ryan is the heartbeat of the Falcons’ offense. The team goes where he goes. If he has a bad game then odds are the entire offense will have a bad game.

Slow starts happen, but that isn’t the only thing that has hindered the Falcons’ offense. The team is also dealing with a case of bad luck. The offense has been turning the ball over at an astounding rate, but a lot can be chalked up to a case of bad luck.

The Falcons’ offense has killed it in the fourth quarter thus far. Everyone wants to be playing their best ball when it matters most, but if that means playing catch up more times than not then you’re not going to succeed every time.

The Falcons have been able to come back in the fourth quarter due to the fact that they have an extremely high-powered offense. Not a lot of teams in the NFL have an offense that can let it fly in the fourth quarter and succeed. The Falcons do.

It’s actually quite funny that the Falcons are dealing with this in 2015. In 2012, the Falcons suffered from poor second half play. They were able to get a big lead at halftime and hold on for dear life to win their games. 2015 has been the exact opposite.

If the Falcons can figure out how to come out of the gates swinging, then this is a team that can go very far in the postseason. Will they get things figured out? No doubt. The offense is too good not to.
